"Strategic's 1st SouthEastern Europe IT FORUM 2001":
Human Resources Shortage & IT: Lessons from Israel
Athens, 14 June 2001 - Small "digital dragons" like Israel and Ireland are desperately in need of skilled personnel to support their fast growing information technology sector. The shortage of Human Resources in the market is a reality worldwide and it represents a major concern and threat to the development and growth of business in the digital economy. Responding to this challenge "Strategic's 1st SouthEastern Europe IT FORUM 2001", which will be held next Monday and Tuesday, 18 and 19 June, at the Inter-Continental hotel, will give the latest insights on this issue.
A study released by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), states that US companies will seek to hire an additional 1.6 million information Technology workers this year, but they will be able to fill only half the positions. The predictions are that most IT job openings will go unfilled, fact that reinforces the need for better planning, visionary approach and cooperation among decision makers.
Government Agencies, Universities, business associations and business leaders now face a key challenge - to adequately address the IT labour shortage - in a joint effort, by implementing strategic plans such as the project Education 2000, a success case in Israel.
The Israeli Education 2000 project, leaded since 1994 by Mr. Elisha Yanay, aims to study, recommend and act significantly to increase the scope of technological qualification and training of manpower in Israel.
According to Mr. Elisha Yanay, Corporate Vice President of Motorola Inc and Chairman of the Board, and General Manager, Motorola Communications Israel the Israeli sales volume has grown from $6.5 B in 1996 to approximately $15.5 B in the year 2000. For the same period the engineer and scientist population has grown from 17,000 in 1996 to 42,000 in 2000. To maintain its technological position, Israel needs to increase dramatically the number of electrical engineering and computer science graduates.
Mr. Elisha Yanay's, one of the top guest speakers at the Forum, will give a presentation regarding the three-stage action plan of Education 2000 project, which include the following main topics:
|
|
The need for collaboration between the high-tech industry and the academic institutes for the achieving of a better ratio between IT demand and needs
|
