Initiative for the Digital Divide by the ΙΤ Forum of Strategic International SA
"Digital Adoption" of a Remote Greek Region

Αthens 19 June 2001 - An ambitious plan for the "Digital Adoption" of a remote Greek region, with aim the expansion of IT and Internet in Greece, as well as bridging the Digital Gap between big cities and remote regions, was announced today at "Strategic's S.E.Europe IT FORUM 2001". 

In the framework of this initiative, a remote region or municipality consisting of several villages and having a low IT and Internet penetration will be chosen. At these villages, projects like the following will be realized: Installation of PCs and off the self software, connection to Internet, design and operation of an interactive Internet site of the region, training of the inhabitants on the use of PCs and Internet, support of the PCs and the site, helpdesk for technical support.

The benefits from this initiative are expected to be important as the economical development of the region will be advanced, the population and especially young people will accoustom to the information technology, while the programme will be an important pilot action for the integration of the Greek countryside, which is in a digital illiteracy in remote regions, into the Information Society.

The cost is planned to be completely covered by IT, Telecoms and Internet companies, which will be the sponsors of this effort. The initiative will be under the aegis of "Strategic's S.E.Europe IT FORUM", which will form a committee whose members will be announced soon.
