"Strategic's TELECOMS Observatory 2001"
A unique mapping of Telecommunications in Greece and Cyprus, is now available

Athens, 6 February 2002 - The Greek Telecoms market came up to 2,3 trillion GRD in 2000, showing an increase of 13%, a bit lower than the growth rate of the European telecoms sector. According to an analysis of the company Strategic International, the Greek telecoms market is expected to increase by 13% in 2001.
The biggest share of the market, 80% belongs to the services whereas the rest 20% to the telecom equipment. The intense competition stemming from the telecom market deregulation will change today's scenery, will slowly give a new thrust to the market and also is going to give an end to the monopoly of the Greek Telecoms Organization (OTE). All these findings, together with many analyses, forecasts and useful information about the Telecoms markets and companies of Greece and Cyprus are included in the annual publication "Strategic's TELECOMS Observatory 2001 - Greece & Cyprus", edited and published by Strategic International/ K.Kataras S.A., one of the leading strategy consulting firms for the Digital Economy.

Cyprus: Leading the way in E. Mediterranean Telecoms
The geographical placement of Cyprus, standing in the middle of Eastern Mediterranean, is probably its most important telecom issue.
The Cypriot Telecommunication Market is truly well developed. With a current size of 420 million Euros and a 600 Euros Telecoms spending per capita, Cyprus can only be compared with mature Western European countries. The high GDP and the strong Tourism industry further enhance that phenomenon.
There are five major ISPs in the island, competing to get the almost 100.000 dial up subscribers for themselves. The anyway high Internet penetration is expected to further boost after deregulation, when connectivity and use charges are expected to drop.

The contribution of Telecoms in the Global Village
The Information Society, in which we live in, requires a stable, broadband and most of all cheap of transporting information and data across the globe, or even the office, a role performed by Telecoms. Apart from that role, Telecommunications are also utilized as a business enabler, as they are the bearer of important customer data, which can be transformed to knowledge and then to profit, while they are the contact point between a company, its suppliers and its customers.
However, the access of these global Information Highways is not equal to all. The "Information Rich" Western world has fast, cheap and broadband access to all kinds of information and telecom services, while the "Information Poor" rest of the world has narrowband, expensive and sometimes no access at all. Towards that direction, the European Union, as well as local governments, have launched ambitious programs, like e-Europe initiative, with poor so far results.
Strategic International/ K.Kataras S.A., capitalizing on its rich New Economy Research and Publications activities, publishes its annual "Strategic's TELECOMS Observatory 2001 - Greece & Cyprus", as part of a series of quality, information-rich annual publications for the New Economy. This year's issue is in English language and also available on CD ROM version, harmonizing with the requirements of globalization and the pan European expansion plans of many Greek and Cypriot New Economy companies. Inside it, the reader can find descriptions of Greek and Cypriot governmental strategies towards the Information Society, a thorough mapping of the Greek and Cypriot Telecoms industry, valuable overviews, trends and key figures for the Telecommunications Markets, profiles of major companies of the sector, bios of key Telecoms personalities of Greece and Cyprus, and many more that render this publication, as well as the other annual publications of Strategic International (Internet Observatory 2001, IT Observatory 2001), an irreplaceable tool to the hand of entrepreneurs and decision makers involved or intending to involve in the field of the New Economy and Telecommunications.
