This year's edition comes at a time when the global technology sector is under considerable pressure. However, the SEEurope and EMed countries are hardly affected by these global developments, having their own race to catch up the developed countries and thus are presenting attractive growth rates in their IT and TELECOMS markets.

Regarding Telecommunications:
Greece: A Steady Growth for TELECOMS
The Greek Telecom Market's growth rate was 9,5% for 2001. Contrarily to the IT Market of that year, it stands for an impressive 5% of the country's GDP, quite near to the Western European average. All three domains of the market (fixed -mobile-equipment), grew in slower rates than the previous years. For the first time in the last years, telecom equipment presented the highest growth rates, with mobile telephony ranking second and already mature fixed telephony third, always in terms of growth rate. It is common knowledge that mobile telephony seems to be reaching the ceiling in penetration, while fixed telephony failed to refresh its product proposals and bring thus increased revenues to the industry.

Cyprus: Leading the Way in E. Mediterranean Telecoms
The geographical placement of Cyprus, standing in the middle of Eastern Mediterranean, is probably its most important telecom issue.
As of 2000, Cyprus had 650 telephone lines per 1000 persons among a population of close to 700.000. The current mobile telephone operator reports a penetration of 47% at the end of 2001, and offers advanced services such as short message service and WAP. Regarding 2000, there were six Internet Service Providers (ISP) and about 80.000 Internet users.
According to Strategic International's forecasts, the Cypriot Telecommunications Market in 2001, approached 245 million CYP, while in 2003 is expected to overcome 310 million CYP. The Services sector, in 2000, approached the 88,5% of the total market, while the Equipment sector was the rest 11,5%.
